Turkey Nabbed
Our most Memorable Thanksgiving
I received the strangest call Thanksgiving morning, “the turkey has been stolen!” Certain that it was a misunderstanding I began asking around the Mission imagining one of our staff had simply moved it from the pavilion to the cottage where we were to share dinner latter that day. After a diligent search and finding a door easily opened despite being locked, it was determined that sure enough, the turkey was gone, along with a roasted ham and sixteen dozen cookies baked for the Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration coming up December 12th.
That afternoon we gathered round a very large table set with many friends and shared a wonder filled Thanksgiving. We laughed about the oddity of having your turkey stolen on Thanksgiving and the irony that we even kept the Food Bank open that day for people in need. But more than anything, we were directed to a place of deep thanksgiving realizing that we live in a country so blessed by God with abundance, that we could laugh about what happened. This was followed up by the additional blessing of being offered turkeys from friends throughout this great community; to whom we say thank you and also YES we will take them, as many as we can get because there is a great need out there! Every turkey and or ham we receive will be distributed in Christmas boxes through the Food Bank to a community member in need.
With the celebration of thanks just completed, the great celebration of giving is still in front of us. Can Christmas be robbed? We declare, “Let nothing be stolen from Christmas” and invite all to join us in denying anything to the contrary through the power of giving. May the gift of abundance be shared by everyone this Christmas, both those who give and those who receive. Donations can be delivered to the Kodiak Island Food Bank located at the Kodiak Baptist Mission. For more information call 486-4126.
