|Kodiak: The Town
The town of Kodiak was the first Russian settlement in Alaska
and is the oldest"European" town in Alaska.
The city has a settled feeling and it's nickname--"The Emerald Isle"--belies its
beauty. Kodiak's major income source is the commercial fishing industry. It is the second
busiest fishing city in the US.
Currently, Kodiak has a population of about 15,000 people.
Most inhabitants live in the town of Kodiak or serve at the Coast Guard Base on the
southeast side of the island.
